Vilgelmshtayn island

Vilgelmshtayn island located on Lake Steynhuder World, northwestern Germany. Duke Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe (1724-1777) created a fortress on the island to protect its rather small county. This is actually an artificial island on the basis of a pile of stones, which brought here by local fishermen in their boats. The fortress was originally composed of 16 islands, which were later combined. In the fortress Wilhelm created Military College. Only once the island proves useful when in 1787 was besieged by the Duke of Hesse-Kassel, and successfully kept the onslaught. Vilgelmshtayn today - a museum and a popular destination for tourists who visit these places.
