More than five thousand people were evacuated and several were killed by forest fires that raged for almost a month in the Canary Islands and managed to destroy over 10% of the territory. Stable dry weather and the wind played into the hands of the fire. The authorities of the islands have long despaired to cope with the fire element on their own, and Spain (Canary Islands - Spanish territory) throws in the Canary Islands not only firefighters and special equipment, but also hundreds of soldiers. So far - almost to no avail.
